OUR PAST EVENTS HAVE INCLUDED …..
On 11th October, Epsom College acting head and leading author and historian, Sir Anthony Seldon, was our latest speaker. Over 50 people turned up to listen to Sir Anthony discussing his latest book about Boris Johnson in conversation with local entrepreneur Michael Hayman. It was an enthralling evening!
At the beginning of October, we hosted an event entitled ‘Turning the Pages of Tudor London’. It was a fascinating evening with Dr Helen Naylor exploring how literature depicts the reality of life in London in Tudor times.
On July 6th we were honoured to host Frances Quinn on publication day of the paperback edition of her feel-good story, That Bonesetter Woman.
On April 27th, we were lucky enough to host Mary Lawson, author of Crow Lake and A Town Called Solace. She was “in conversation” with Ana Sampson and gave a fascinating insight into her writing process, as well as signing copies of all four of her books.
On Saturday March 25th Luke Adam Hawker not only signed copies of his book “The Last Tree” but also completed a wonderful illustration on our shop window. Thank you Luke for spending so much time with us and our customers.
In February we ran our second book club event, featuring the best-seller Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead. Many interesting discussions were had and an eventual score of 8.5 out of 10 for the book proved a great result!
During the October half-term we hosted a workshop for primary school children who spent a lovely couple of hours learning to draw cartoons.
On 13th October, we welcomed broadcaster and author, Michael Hayman, who interviewed local author Rod Green – talking about “cosy crime” and how, since the death of his friend MC Beaton, Rod has continued her best-selling fiction series featuring Agatha Raisin and Hamish Macbeth.
On 12th October, World Poetry Slam Champion Harry Baker performed live to a sell-out audience.
We were lucky enough to host a cookery demonstration on 6th October from the best-selling cookery author of Chilli & Mint, Torie True. We enjoyed and were inspired by both her enthusiasm and the wonderful dishes she created on the night!
On Saturday 1st October we were delighted to welcome Gyles Brandreth to the shop where he entertained us all and signed copies of his new book “A History of Britain in Just a Minute”.
In September, Rosalind Brookman ran an informative workshop giving our attendees time and space to write in a friendly and supportive environment.
In July, an extremely entertaining and informative talk was given by local publicist, Ana Sampson, who talked us through the history of women in literature, from a daring duchess to an ambitious housemaid! She also introduced us to her fabulous poetry anthologies, She Is Fierce, She Will Soar and Night Feeds and Morning Songs.
In June, a great night was had by all at our first ever Book Group Event – an Italian evening themed around Sarah Winman’s book Still Life. This sell out event included much discussion around this wonderfully evocative book, accompanied by Italian food and drink and a fun quiz.
In April, Tim Harkness talked about his new book on how to conduct difficult conversations. Tim is a Counselling Psychologist and has worked with elite sportsmen and women across the globe. He is currently Head of Sports Science and Psychology at Chelsea FC but his ten rules are relevant wherever you might have ‘difficult conversations’.
Launching Word on the Street Bookshop, on Wednesday 2 March, we were excited to welcome Mel Giedroyc who officially opened the shop to get us up and running. Mel was, of course, fantastic. Thank you, Mel, for being so kind and giving us such a great evening and start to our life on The Street.
